Removing a test case from a test plan

How to take a case out of an existing test plan, and what that does to runs you have already started.

A test plan's case list stays editable after the plan is created, but the control that changes it is not on the plan's case list. It is on the plan's edit screen, behind a button labelled Add cases — and that picker is where you take cases out as well as put them in.

The plan's Test Cases tab has no remove option. The buttons there — Assign, Assign to me and Unassign — only change who a case belongs to.

Removing a case

1. Open the plan. Go to Test Plans and open the plan you want to change.

2. Open the plan's menu. Click the three-dot menu at the top right, beside Start a run, and choose Edit.

3. Open the case picker. On the Edit test plan screen, click Add cases. The line above it tells you how many cases the plan holds right now.

4. Untick the case. In Select test cases, clear the checkbox beside the case you want out of the plan, then click Done. The counter at the top of the picker tracks your selection as you go.

5. Save. Click Save on the edit screen. The plan's case count updates straight away.

What happens to runs you have already started

Removing a case changes what future runs built from this plan will contain. It does not rewrite a run that already exists:

Change

Active run, no results

Active run, results recorded

Completed run

Case removed from plan

Case removed from run

Case not removed

No change

Qase protects recorded work. If a case already has results in an active run, taking it out of the plan leaves those results where they are.

FAQ

Can I remove several cases at once? Yes. Untick as many as you like before clicking Done — the picker applies the whole selection in a single save. You can also untick a whole suite from the left panel to take all of its cases out.

Does removing a case from a plan delete the case? No. The case stays in the repository, and in any other plan that references it. A plan points at cases; it does not own them.

Can I put the case back? Yes. Open the same picker and tick it again. Assignee information you set on the plan is reapplied when the case is selected again.
